How to stay safe around coyotes in your neighborhood.
Feeding coyotes makes them lose their natural fear of people, making them bolder and more dangerous over time.
Keep pets on a short leash. Never leave small pets unattended outdoors, especially at dawn, dusk, or night.
If a coyote approaches, make yourself large — yell, clap, wave your arms. Never turn and run.
Use bungee cords or locking lids on trash cans. Open trash is one of the primary food sources for urban coyotes.
Walk pets during daylight when possible. Coyotes are most active at dawn, dusk, and overnight.
Outdoor cats are especially vulnerable. Keep them inside, particularly overnight and during early morning hours.
Back away slowly — do not run. Running triggers a chase response. Make eye contact and stay calm.
